Range of Motion: Ankle Dorsiflexion
Jun 28, 2023To test ankle dorsiflexion range of motion with an inclinometer, you would follow these steps:
- With their shoes and socks off, get your client to lie down in a supine position on a massage table.
- Press the play button on the Measurz inclinometer and instruct the client to actively pull their toes up toward their body as far as they can.
- Ensuring the inclinometer is aligned with the head of the first metatarsal and calcaneus, hit the pause, and then the save button to record and view the results.
- This test can also be performed passively by assisting the client to achieve extra range of motion. Either active or passive variation is acceptable, however it is critical that whatever variation is chosen is consistent and that it is recorded in the notes section. NB: We should see a result of anywhere between 15 and 20 degrees of ankle dorsiflexion when performing this test.
The normal ankle dorsiflexion range of motion is anywhere between 15 and 20 degrees, but this can vary slightly depending on the individual. It's important to remember that normal range of motion can also vary based on factors such as age, gender, and physical activity level.
